Following the disastrous 1979 Fastnet Race with its tragic loss of lives., American aeronautical engineer Don Jordan came up with the idea of the series drogue. The concept of a number of small cones on a long nylon rope was simple and subsequent exhaustive testing by the United States Coast Guard showed the Series Drogue was unbeatable as a device to prevent the capsize or pitchpoling of small vessels.
